You hear STEAM more often and many people ask themselves: What is this term all about? What is behind it and do I have to be interested in it?
That's exactly why we want to educate about STEAM in this article and also explain the topic of STEAM toys.
What is STEAM?
The term STEAM is an acronym and is formed from the first letters of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. STEAM is often used in connection with the subjects taught or studied in theses fields.
The various subject areas that are part of STEAM all build on each other. Mathematics forms the cornerstone for the other fields and promotes logical thinking in particular. The other areas - i.e. technology, natural sciences and engineering are built on mathematics and are necessary for various areas of everyday life. With the help of technology, we understand how various technical devices work and technology is also in many everyday objects. A basic understanding of technology is required in many professions and helps in everyday life. With the help of science, we gain a better understanding of energy and the environment.
In schools and universities, the subjects are often taught in isolation, but according to scientists, it makes more sense to combine them. Because they build on each other and can't exist without one another, a basic understanding of the STEAM fields is necessary, even if you only want to learn one of the subjects.
Why is STEAM funding so important?
An understanding of STEAM fundamentals is beneficial in every aspect of life. Basic technical skills are required in many jobs, even if they have nothing to do with STEAM. Both technical and computer skills are often needed to operate technical equipment in everyday life.
Despite the many opportunities offered by STEAM subjects, they are not particularly popular among children and young people. However, there is an acute shortage of skilled workers in STEAM professions, which is to be prevented by early and practical introduction to the subject of STEAM. STEAM professions are relevant to the future and deal primarily with innovation and the environment. Things like climate change, energy supply or mobility fall under STEAM and are both interesting and important for the future.
Why STEAM toys?
With the help of toys, children can be introduced to the various STEAM fields at a very young age. While playing, children also learn the basic principles in the different STEAM fields and have fun at the same time. STEAM toys exist for all ages and thus can go deeper into the topics with different levels of difficulty.
Each STEAM toy promotes one or more skills and by playing with them, children automatically train these skills. Whether it's logical thinking, fine motor skills, or geometry, there are many different skills that can be fostered through STEAM toys and thanks to them, children can have fun learning about them.
STEAM toys include educational toys that can be assigned to at least one of the STEAM areas. In other words, the toy must at least fit into the area of mathematics or the areas of technology, natural sciences or engineering. Of course, it would be optimal if a toy fits into all categories. STEAM toys also encourage problem-solving, flexible and logical thinking. Other skills such as coordination, agility or spatial awareness can also be promoted.
